A Great Disaster was formed in 2011 with the vision of blending musical genres and styles with Appalachian folk sensibilities. "Under a Blue Sky" is the band's fourth official release, and it is the first entirely collaborative songwriting effort between guitarist/pianist, Zach Ross and violinist, Westley Harris.
"Under a Blue Sky" utilizes a variety of musical styles and forms while also exploring a variety of lyrical moods and emotions. Opening with the blissful, smitten, yearning and searching depicted in "On the Breeze," the record evolves emotionally, concluding with more intense ballads of fear, risk, law, and modern survival in "Spirit Is Near It" and "We All Know." In between, other tracks send the the listener adrift in the loss and epiphany of "Off Your Course," while in contrast, "City Doesn't Sleep" leaves listeners dancing with newfound joy in the streets of the city of their choice.
At any given moment, "Under a Blue Sky" can sound like a funky roots rock, barn-burning newgrass, melancholy indie folk, improvised jam, or soulful country project. This album is bound to sonically take listeners both somewhere familiar and somewhere unexpected.
