about

"Over a Dark Water" is the fifth studio release by A Great Disaster and is also the sequel to the band's 2018 release, "Under a Blue Sky." In comparison to their previous discography, this set of seven songs features a more character driven and story-centric approach in which uniquely interesting and contrasting characters either tell the story themselves or become central to the plot and message of the piece. Stylistically, the album begins with an homage to genres of the mid 20th century featuring an up-tempo tune reminiscent of early ragtime jazz plus a swanky Americana jam that conjures feelings akin to the electrified Bob Dylan era with it's good-time swing groove and tongue-in-cheek traditional waltz bookends. The Americana essence is further emphasized in "The Dream" which uses a driving yet flexible hook, acceptingly contemplative verses, and a vacuum-like, cavernous bridge to illustrate the persistent journey of a single, despondent moment. The centerpiece track, “Long Gone,” is a folk ballad fantasy in which the speaker recounts his Grandmother’s prophecy that he would travel and not settle down where he came from. The setting is a garden, picking beans threaded to grow through fences, early in the morning when the dew still felt cold. The album closes with yet another contrast of styles, synthesizing the blissful dance of a summer festival with the introspective daydream by a local stream.
